Default Tiling in an archway - Need Advice

    Evening Guys,

Just need abit of advice on a job which i'll be doing in a few weeks, basically the clients friend who has tiled in the past started to tile the bathroom but hasnt been able to finish it.

I have been called in to complete the job. Its basically 2 walls from the border upwards but there is a small archway feature over the sink which the client would like to keep........hopefully i've uploaded the photo's correctly for you to see.

Now, the tiles which the client has, have to be 400 mil by 300mil.........Maybe more......so i know i cant use them to tile inside the arch........what i'm thinking is to maybe tile the inner archway with mosiac? and put a silver trim around the edge of the arch.....

Anyhoooo, if you could take alook at the pics and let me know, please take a look at the cut around the edge of the windowsil........yes, i nearly cried too!

    Thanks again!

A silver or metal tile edge will not form around the inside or outside if the arch, plastic will. If you cut cardboard to size of your tiles, then place them on the wall mark the card on the back to the shape of the curve and transpose onto your tile. Once tiled you can bend and pin your plastic trim around the curve and mosaic will bed in up to it.....Gaz

you say you cant use the tiles that you have to insert inside the edge and that you are going to use mosaics. could tou not cut slither/ piano keys of the tile and gradually form the internal curve? just a thought

Also to bend the trim you will need to put cuts into the flat edge of the trim just short of the profile( every couple of inches or so) then it will bend no probs without kinking.....

I use a nail gun to tack mine in place.......use the thickness of what ever you are putting in the inside of the arch to tack the trim in the right spot all the way around the arch........easy once you have done it once.......

    Ahh no no no

Mark as gaz says but the trim needs to go around inside or you wont get your finishes and put the trim around first then tile down onto it then the tiles dont slip

Just pop the tiles off that are already at the sides of the arch......putting the trim around the outside has the advantage of hiding the cut edge of the tile as the tile sits in behind the trim profile.
so no untidy edges can be seen , but as gaz say's both ways work.........

Never said you did Gaz but you gave the choice Dave said too cut it around, I mearley advised on the best way from looking at the picture he provided.

The easiest way and best way to finish the existing tiling would be to run it inside.

Did you ever finish tiling the arch? Do you have any helpful comments or pictures of the finished project?

Welcome to the forum Snooker. One can only assume you have an arch to tile?

Would you like to post some pics of your arch and we'll get down to the nitty-gritty for you.

Please note that TileSmasher posted that nearly a year ago and may not be around to respond to you requests.

My archway is currently in my head - sorry - no pictures.
I've got a recessed ceiling over my shower - currently all 90 degree angles. I'm planning to build an arch at the entrance to the shower, which will be tiled and have two or three recessed lights.

My plan is to run 1x2 inch rectangular tiles along the curve and use 4 inch tiles with 90 degree bends to run along the inside and outside of the arch to transition to the walls running up from the arch. I'm planning to use porcelain and possibly cut the 4 inch transition tiles smaller to make them appear to bend with the arch better.

I've been looking for pictures of tiled arches to get ideas on how to make the arch tile look good.

I will build the arch width to match the width of the tile, mortar, backerboard and plywood used, leaving enough room to fit the recessed lights.

I'd appreciate any advice you may have at this point in the project. I'll post back when I get further down the road and include pictures.
