am i a miracle worker!!!!!!!
hi again everyone,
yesterday i started tiling a display in my local tile shop that i had just started to use. when i got there they said they wanted me to put up 300 x 600 black quartz tiles in vertical brick bond pattern. when they showed me the bay i said werent they gonna take the old tiles off and they said they wanted me to tile on top. i said no and spent 3 hours taking off the tiles as there were already 2 layers up. once i had finished i realised that the plaster board walls had chunks out of it and was slightly convexly curved. i asked if they would reboard the wall and they said no they wouldnt pay for it to be reboarded. so i warned them that i wasnt going to be perfect. this morning i went in to carry on tiling and they said the boss wants u to take them all off and start again to make sure all the tiles are flat as some are lipping slightly. i said that the tiling will only ever be as good as the wall behind, said im a tiler not a miracle worker and tore up my trade card handed it in and took my business cards with me. im sure i will be hearing from the boss when he get back this afternoon. do u think i have done the right thing as im sure the boss will now slate me to customers.
cheers H

Re: am i a miracle worker!!!!!!!
Good for you for sticking to your obvious high standards but if it`s your local tile shop i may have been a little more reserved in my reaction and asked to see the manager to explain about the need for perfect background for brickbond (although you would think he would have known that!) but spur of the moment and everything i guess....

Re: am i a miracle worker!!!!!!!
When yer tiling displays, you can glue newspaper onto the board, and tile on top of it. Dead easy to remove later.

Re: am i a miracle worker!!!!!!!
Displays are wot sells tiles...they should know this and make sure you have wot you need.......And seen as they are displays it would be better if they were laminated type boards and the tiles hot melt glued...much easier to do and remove........

If their displays are all lipped and cockeyed I doubt you'd have got much work from them anyway.
You really don't want a crap job on display that can be attributed to you, you did the right thing my friend.

I think, h, was tiling a full mock bathroom display though.
BTW, h, I think you did the right thing too.

Personally I would of overboarded the existing tiles with 3/8 plasterboard and laid onto that, the time saved in labour removing the tiles would of paid for the board and you would be clean now.
As has been stated maybe a little less haste in pulling yourself out, its your bread and butter and there is "make no mistake" no better way of getting yourself out there than have displays up in an outlet.
