jobs taking longer than expected

am on a private job now im tiling 20 sq m2 walls and 4 floor i have been there for a week the walls were seriously out worse walls i have worked on (even worse than council properties) the customer was on a limited budget so i have tried to keep the cost down for them so i bonded the which made them a bit flatter so far i reckon i have another day on it its been a job from hell but im nearly there and it looks great so far

to be honest i thought i would have done it quicker but with all the prep work it has took longer than anticipated at one point i wanted towalk away but ive stuck at it and im starting to see the rewards

i reckon i underestimated this job alot trickier than i thought lessons to learned

I have had a few of those, but not anymore i think these sort of jobs make you look at future jobs a bit more carefully. Good luck

As enduro say`s,you will look at future jobs differently.Wanted to walk from a few jobs like that myself but bills need to get paid.

Don't feel bad about it. Experience is a costly tutor but sometimes it is the best way to learn.

Been caught out many times with under-estimating myself and although I'd like to say it's in the past now - it isn't.

We're all still learning.....

There again though, we still get jobs that take a lot less time than we thought it might do, so now it's levels it's self out a bit

good advice from all you guys thanks i would have thought being in the trade nearly 4 years i should be able to work out how long jobs will take put then again the firm i was working with we only tiled new houses (easy) going self employed tiling is alot different a learnining curve i think


ps anyway tiling completed and grouting tommorow and a big clean up the customer loves it which is always nice to know tiles look great great bumpy white on brickbond with a mosaic border

That's weird - just finished exactly the same job and the walls were also the worst i have ever worked on. I put my 1 metre straight edge on the wall, flat one end for 1/2 metre and at hte other end i could get my whole arm underneath it! Nightmare. The ceiling was artexed and bumps everywhere, the doorframe had dry paint all over it and was bumpy

One of the walls had tiles 1/2 way up, then a dado rail then above had been re-plastered - didn't relise this until i got to where it had been plaster and the tiles lipped out by about 10mm! showed customer and had to take tiles off, strip all plaster back to brickwork, then dot n dab plaster board. That turned out to be the only decent wall. They also had a mosaic border, but couldn't use it as the walls were so bad it would have lipped out in some places and then recessed about 5mm in others.

The floor was also bumpy and unlevel but they were on a budget and weren't prepared for the prep work. I hated this job and my motto is now the old addage

'Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail'.

Not worth the hassle trying to make good on jobs. Anyway, got my cheque this evening, going to pay it in tommorow and learn from this and recharge the batteries!

By the way, i don't think any adhesive manufacturers will gaurentee their addy if you tile on bonding, has to be a finish / top coat. I spoke to BAL Technical and they said it is a wait issue - just a thought

i tile onto bonding now and again. not full walls but fairly big patches. just prime it a few times and its fine. i wouldnt recommend doing full walls in it but splashbacks etc should be fine

i wouldnt usually tile on full bonded walls but the customer had a certain budget plus there looking to sell so they said the next house if it requires prep work then i can board it

it may not be recommended but i primed the walls first so i think it should be ok but im not goin to make a habit of bonding walls sometimes its just more practical
