Remember your corners are your expansion joints normaly. Though most are grouted up I'm pretty sure they should be siliconed? Would there be some wall-size requirement to come in to play with this?

I normally try to leave a gap about the width of the grout lines, but it varies depending on the size of the tiles and substrate.

The why, when, and how, of silicone

I dont normally do kitchens and bathrooms but, have noticed a lot of them seem to just be grouted over roughly 3mm but never exact. I commercial jobs we leave a 6mm joint for silicone and this is done by a specialist company. If we were to leave a 3mm joint and grout it, we'd be asked to rake it out and re-cut the tiles accordingly.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm not fussy about the gap just as long as there is one and it's not huge and wastes all my expensive silicone trying to fill the black hole from hell.

Personally I have my gaps in the corners, or any cut any where, as small as possible, 1mm at max, any more and I would consider this a very poor cut! Imo and to be honest all the customers and shops I fit for say that this gives an excellent finsh. Personally would never dream of leaving a gap the same size of the grout line???
