Default cutting around toilet and sink with travertine??

Hi there,

I'm starting a bathroom floor next week, the tiles are 600x400x12mm travertine. Can i cut around the toilet and sink by scoring and snapping or do i have to do it with the wet cutter?(or should i insist on moving the toilet and sink?)

Also will my plasplugs contractor be able to cut the travertine and what blade would i use?

Cheers guys

Hi Monty,

Pretty sure there is a similar thread to this somewhere and Travertine has to be cut with a wet cutter

Cant you remove the toilet and sink? as you will have a tough time cutting the travertine neatly.
Cutting by wet cutter or angle grinder ( very dusty)

Mate, take them out. Aside from not being proper procedure, cutting around them looks like ****, and it'll probably take longer time than removing the wares first and putting them back afterwards.

As the rest are saying, you'll need a wet saw or an angle grinder to cut natural stone. Be careful to not overheat the motor of your plasplugs though.

It will be best to use a continuos rim blade suitable for marble. Always use the right blade for the right job. If you are not going to have any edges showing you can use a dry cutting blade (for marble) but depending the type of cutting, the vibrations through using a angle grinder will chip the edges or in some situation break the stone.

If is a one off job, I personally recommend you hire a decent wet cutter (with the barble blade) with the widest trays to support the 600 width span. If on the other hand you are going to do more of stone work, then it will make sense in purchasing a decent wet saw. I use a Ruby and it is good starting point.

Hope this help.

remember that your raising the toilet 12mm just with the tiles and you may need to alter toilet waste and water inlet etc!
