Default Uneven Walls!

I know this has probably been done to death but, how do you decide if a wall is to bad to work with so you have to reboard it? I have read a thread on here where they have said they have filled in bowes in the wall that were roughly an inch!!! If you use a straight edge and some rapid set is there a maximum depth of what you can fill it in by? Or would such bowes in the wall have to be built up in stages?
Also if you do have to resort to reboarding then whats the quickest method of getting plaster down to the bare brick? Is it the auld trusty hammer and chisel or do you guys you other methods?

i would plaster walls with rapid set (all the low points) then use a 1800 feather edge from the bottom of the wall and pull it horizontally up the wall, this will shave off all the high points of f your rapid set. It doesnt need to be perfect as long as it is reasonably straight. If the walls were really bad and unworkable you will have to reboard, but if its just minor then as above. You can build the rapidset up in levels which cures in 3 hours, but you need to work fast as you only have 20 mins working time.

I have the same problem, i want to board the walla but cant cos the bath taps are to close to the wall.

Ive been told to bond it. should tak 4 hours to dry.

What exactly is Rapid set and where can you buy it from. is it like adhesive

The wall i want to do dips and comes out and i dont know what to do. I was thinking of hacking of the high bits and bonding the lows.

How is this done ?

Cheers Den. Will follow that advice when needed. I take it i might still need to pack out abit if walls arn't perfect to avoid lipping or should this be enough to eliminate that problem? Or is it a case of trowell the wall up and see how they lie? Do you always use your spirit level on top of tiles to check against lipping?
Sorry for all the questions!

Hi Tys, rapid set is adhesive, the cement based powder...rapid set adhesive..you will get it from any of your tile shops, just need to decide what make to go with, Bal and Mapei are a suggestion..Mark.

i would say if the walls are reasonably level then lipping should not be a problem,..Remember if you are using rapidset in stages to prime each stage first..

do B&Q sell rapidset.

This is for dave. never used rapidset before , ive been pretty lucky for walls in the past.

Not to sure about the priming. do you mean prime say 1sm of wall then put tiles on using rapidset then move on to the next part of the wall

Tysfoot I think he means skimming the wall with the rapidset and priming in between each layer of skim.... building up the layers until you have an even wall. Rapidset is used because its fast drying time compared to a plaster skim and the primer is used to prevent the risk of a chemical reaction between the gypsum and the cement in the adhesive.
