Default Why You Should Waterproof

Ok since Dave has shown us what a great job he did on his sunroom floor recently, I thought taht I would post some pics of a job in prgress of a bathroom that has had some serious water damage. The scope of works for the job are as follows:-

1. demolish old bathroom and remove fixtures and fittings
2. Determine the extent of the water damage and rectify
3. Re-configure plumbing to clients specs
4. Re-sheet walls
5. waterproof
6. Install new tiles
7. install new fixtures

As this job is an insurance claim (I do work for several insurance companies) the scope of works must be followed to the letter any deviation from this and the insurance company will need to be notified, and work will have to be reassesd.

It also gives the newbies a chance to get familar with the type of work we do down here and the problems and damage leaky showers can potentially do if left un waterproofed.

There are no pics of the actual demolition as I was called away to another job and let the guys I get to do this part get on with the job, Just frees my time up a bit to do other stuff.

1st pic shows a section of wall framing that has completly faild due to water leaking in behind the wall. Will need to be replace.

2nd pic shows the extent of the water damage affecting the entire lower half of the wall framing all this will need to be rectified.

3rd & 4th pics shows the wall framing that has been fixed.

5th & 6th pics show the re-configured plumbing work from behind the shower recess

7th & 8th pic show the shower recess sheeted and ready for tomorrows job Waterproofing.

Pic 9 shows what I should be doing other than bathroom renovations. Catching giant BARRA with my brother in-law Pat. A bad days fishing beats a good days work IMO.

Will be doing the waterproofing tomorrow so will post the pics of that process tomorrow night Enjoy!!!

Cheers Mick

Hi wetdec,

The waterproofing product is called Adflex W.A.M.F.R (Wet Area Membrane Fibre Reinforced). For those that aren't familar it is a acrylic membrane that needs to be applied in 2 coats 1st coat acts as a primer followed by second coat with mesh tape in all internal corners for strenght and flexability. It is compatable with all adhesives and is a breeze to apply extremly good quality product that meets or should that be exceeds all of the A.S (Australian Standards) codes.

Woke to a glorious morning down her today, starting to cool at the start of a busy day Summer might well be over. A fine looking day ahead just perfect for fishing.......................I mean waterproofing

1st pic shows the waterproofing product that I use have used it for as long as I can remember with no failures or problems................Touch wood

2nd pic shows the fibre tape that is applied to internal corners and joins. This is not a requirement when using Adfex but I useit for extra insurance and it's also easily applied and the cost is minimal.

3rd pics shows the primer which will be applied to the walls and floor it is sold in 20lt drums and I simply pour this into a 5lt container for ease of use. It is very vicous and it is like water to apply so you get good penertration and sealing properties, it also allows for a better flow of the membrane product.

4th & 5th pic shows the the primer that has been applied to the walls and floor. It dries quickly and within 20 minutes the membrane can start to be applied.

6th pic shows the membrane being applied with the fibre webbing in the corners.

pics 7&8 shows the finished shower recess with all joins taped as well as wall corners and wall floor corners. As this is a slab on ground the rest of the bathroom floor only has to have the perimeter walls taped and waterproofed. If it was on the first floor I would have to istall the membrane across the entire floor.

The big barra was caught in lake prosipine north Queensland (freshwater) and was about 87cm from memory and weight was around the 18-20kg mark. I usally go every year but haven't been for the last 2 years hence the dreaming.

I never use nails... always use screws.
I have seen walls actually move in and out of their position. That happens when I open the bathroom door. It happens if the door has been fitted too tight (not enough gap at the bottom). When you open the door a little too fast, the walls move outwards and when closing it too fast, they move inwards. You can see the difference if you open the window in the room.

I don't know how many nails they put on the boards but some of the old tiles were coming off it.
