Hi Guys,

Back off a tiling course in Newbury which was a really enjoyable week and off the back of this I've decided to do a small bathroom floor for a friend. (2.5 sqm)

Unfortunatley the plumber has just finished installing the new toilet and shower cubilcle and I have a couple of points confirming my plan of attack if poss!

- 1) If I isolate the cold water and empty the toilet do both the waste and cold water feed pipes usually have enough give for the tile? I will be laying Karndean ceramic 1 by 2 ft (approx) and 8 mm high. Or does it differ job to job, Ive had a look and it looks ok for the waste but I'm concearned about the feed pipe (15mm) moving up another 10mm or so.

-2) Would you normally just profile the tray and cut / nibble and file the tiles and the sealent for the best finish.

-3) Is the normal choice of grout grey for slate effect tiles or is this just personal preference?

-4) As the tiles are so big in such a small area would you just lay as a brick bond?

it is difficult to advise without seeing the pipework AK but sometimes there is sufficient play in the pipework for it to move that amount without strain and other times they will not move at all, but if i can i will always try to remove the pan.
A tile of that size and dimension will look better in brick bond, and i would go for a grey grout that is my opinion every1 differs

A) You'll only really know once you've uncoupled the loo. If there isn't enough movement you can buy an off-set pan connector from DIY for about £5. If the feed pipe needs extending, I would suggest getting a good 15mm pipe slice (£7) and a push fit flexi with isolator (£5) get both from Plumb Centre for cash as DIY stores are a rip off!

A) If it cannot be removed without disturbing wall tiles -YES

-3) Is the normal choice of grout grey for slate effect tiles or is this just personal preference?

A) Personal choice. (mid/light grey for me)

-4) As the tiles are so big in such a small area would you just lay as a brick bond?

A) again, personal preference, but spend time laying out to find the best look.

another quick and easy tip for you when you do remove the toilet pan.

Put your hand in the bowl and swish the water through the waste. that way you end up with less water and it wont come pouring out when you remove the toilet..

Just a small tip that saves a lot of mess

Quickest way to get excess water from the pan i find is to use a sponge to soak it up.....
