Default Over Boarding

Morning all,

I have a question which may have a very simple answer.

When you're overboading with ply on a bathrooom, kitchen or any floor really, how do you ensure you don't drill through any pipes when screwing the boards down.

Or is it just a bit of pot luck!

Cheers

only use screws long enough to go theorugh your board and into, not through, the timber beneath.

Could also use a pipe detector? Although no good if plastic pipes have been used!

Thanks Holohana,
That's what i thought regarding the length of screws, its just i keep reading posts of poor souls who have gone through hot, cold and even gas pipes!

It happens, but as holohana said, add the board thickness to the floorboard thickness and minus a couple of mm or so and thats the screw length you need.

So do you not screw through the ply, through the floor board and part way into the joist to make sure the ply is screwed down propperly? Is it only necessary to screw the ply into the floorboard and not the joist?
