Default At what focal point do u tile from

As some of u are aware I am starting a course on the 6th April, and do do a bit of tiling here and there for my friends and family, I have just recently tiled my kitchen and im wondering where you peeps would start to tile from , personally i like the window, some people say the door way, which ever way i like it to look symetrical.

What do you think
Julie

starting position generally depends on the job, always make sure the good cuts are where the focal point is...I think the look good factor is better than the symetrical look..Mark.

I always treat each wall individually, where ever the window is in the wall i start in the centre of the window to get my cuts even around the window and run my cuts into the corners, and the same as the door, even cuts around the door, you can lose your cuts in the corners as the aren't so visible.

I normally start at the cooker hob, as this tends to have any patterns and is normally the first area looked at in a kitchen.

In a kitchen Julie...focal points, cooker hood, window...so better to centre them for symmetry.....Gaz

Each job is different and i dont believe there is way to start each job the same. Setting out is the most critical part of the job. Try all options and spend time working out where cuts will work, lay tiles out and get a better view how they look.
I met someone recently who was taught to centre walls and cills etc but when i came across him i asked if the 10mm cut in the one corner and the 40mm cut in the other corner looked right to him.
As a focal point though, in a kitchen it could be the space over the hob up to the extractor fan. It could be the Window, as i said , each job is different.

After the datum line, I set out each wall separately. Find centre, offer up gauge, then adjust to get best cuts e.g most equal each side. I then mark all the walls up (horizontal setting out line, vertical setting out, 2 x cut lines) That way I know exactly was is to be expected.

After preparing cuts I end up with three piles before I even lay a tile. Cuts for one side, uncut in the middle, cuts for the other side, and a way I go.

you centre the focul point whatever that might be and the cuts are what they are. If the cuts are not accepatble then you cant centre off the focul point and have to move around to get cuts that are acceptable.

If you have a cooker hood, window and door all in the same wall you make it look as best it can, no other option in my book.
