On a scrap piece of travertine mark it with the pen...leave to dry and try removing it with nail polish remover....if it works with no adverse reaction on the stone then hey presto 1 happy chappy........

I saw a floor once where the tiler marked the all the cuts before he cut and stuck them with a number in non permanent marker on the reverse side .
Came back next day and the numbers had all leached up through 30mm thick stone and were clearly visible on the top.

Very difficult to get out but oxybrite crystals worked in the end from supermarket.
make sure you do a test first to see if effects travertine though.
incidentally pencil can be very difficult to get off some stones, but there is cleaner called brickie which is non acidic which you can get from builder centre that works very well. again test first

dont know if it'l do trick but doing a friends bathroom other wk and marked it with a marker pen and even numbered it in a few places.went to wipe off and wouldnt budge.started panicking then as friend due back and started looking round house for anything really,to try and saw this hairspray, sprayed it straight on,washed over with sponge and it came off almost immediately, thank god.id never felt such relief, espescially as she'd paid nearly £2000 for tiles.they were porcelain.i wont use a marker agen anyway but you all want to give it a test.

If the trav is unfinished I'd go with extra fine steel wool, for getting marks off most tile I find vinegar(not malt)and water works in most cases, good luck,
