Default Working away from home... how much more do you charge?

If any of you work away, how do you charge for it?
Do you just add expenses, or do you also look for a premium, either per metre or per night, on top of your normal rates?

The job was in a Hotel, so meals and B&B were covered by them.
I was working for a company I do work for all the time.
I agreed a days rate for driving there and the same for driving back, best part of 7 hours each way, plus petrol.
I also agreed to do it for normal rate plus what ever they were paying their guys, plumber and joiner, per night.
But it turns out that they were on a price, not their normal day rate plus extra as I thought.
It works out the have more than doubled their weekly wage whilst away though.

I'm not looking for anything like that though. Just wondering what you guys thought is reasonable to ask for, for being away overnight for 5 nights.
I was thinking of 50-60 per night.
Too much, not enough??

Hi Drew i work away quite a lot i would expect to pay my guys about 30% more in that situation if you had agreed to do it on a price and lost money like the plummer could have done if things had gone wrong, as you didn't take that risk you can`t expect to earn what they did IMO :best regards Pete

I did take a risk though.
I agreed to do it on a X amount per mtr rate.
My point is I agreed to do it at that rate, PLUS whatever extra he was paying his men, who are books in.
As you say I could have charged 30% more on that price per mtr.
But I thought I was the one being fair by offering just to take whatever extra per night his men were earning.
But in between time, they changed their arrangement. And the fitters agreed to do it on a price.
A price that meant they earned double their weekly wage. (plumber reckons 4 weeks wages for 10 days work)

Now, I am not looking to earn double my normal rate, far from it. Infact it's far less than the 30% you yourself suggest.
But I do think I have been a little misled, to say the least, when it comes to my agreement with them.

I'd definately say something if I was you mate. Don't let them take advantage.
I'd want enough extra to pay for my accomodation, petrol and £40-£50 per day.

I will do, mate. I will do.

I'm not bursting my balls working 12 hour days, without a break I hasten to add, just to earn normal rates.
5 Bathrooms in 4 days, not bad by anyones standards, IMO.
Yes I earned more in a day than I normally would, but that was down to working 12 hours instead of 8-10.
