Removing Tiles

Hi, i am very new to tiling...did a course last autumn. As of yet i have only tiled onto tiles....Very unsure of how to go about removing tiles....Is there any tips or tools to ease this task....My nightmare is that when i take the tiles down i bring the wall with me...Do i need to replaster after removing the tiles, and is this the job for the tiler....

Lubo.......there's not an easy way of knowing if the tiles are going to make a mess of the walls.........You just need to go careful and try first with a hammer and bolster. If the tiles are donkeys years old, an old scraper may start them off.

As for re-plastering if needed...........some tilers do there own skimming.........some don't. (I do if its a small area.......not brilliantly, but good enough to tile onto)

go on brave it mate worse case wall will collapse lol only kidding what i usually do with walls is get a long slim sized flat screwdriver and say a 8oz hammer nothing too heavy and knock em off gently like that if it was floor recommend buying a mutty from topps for around £23 got gud leaverage on it to pull em up then get down on hands and knees with scraper gud luck all best

hammer and bolster for me,if the walls are gyproc you might also need to repace this as it comes away with the tile unfortunately .

Did they not even touch on the subject on tile removal lubo ? as I would see this as one of the most basics of tiling, knowing how to remove tiles.

you cant beat the old methods of a hammer and bolster, keeps you fit as well.

i used to spend hours doing jobs like that for my dad, the little b*****D lol

Cheers all for the advise, very much appreciated......No Fekin, unfortunately there was nothing covered in the course for removing tiles....i didnt realise how big a part of tiling it is....until now....

big pain in the erse really init?
i find the tiles the easy part, but the adhesive is a different matter.

i've been thinking of purchasing an angle grinder to at least ease the stressfulness! thats the best i can come up with. any other ideas?

also, whats a realistic charge for tile removal?
the last quote i done (whole bathroom) i said day rate (£140) which was agreed then i got the "i need to postpone/death in the family" let down.

Will be doing this tomorrow,what I do before I start is say a prayer to the tiling gods that it doesn't pull all the plaster off,then I offer a sacrifice of something like a snickers bar or bacon sandwich to appease him.

Sometimes works,pray it does tomorrow.

When taking the tiles off always wear,glasses,gloves and sleeves...tiles are sharp.

P.S. don't forget to put dust sheets over the bath and sinks

P.S. wallpaper stripper works well at removing adhesive

when tile removal is involved, tell the customer that you cannot possibly know the state of the substrate behind the tiles until they've been removed and that you may need to get in a plasterer or reboard at extra cost..Mark.

somepunters are fully aware that taking tiles off is troublesome and remember thats why they phone you.however if you maybe feel that the job is too much hassle you can overprice it and you may get the job anyway.i always quote day rate £150 for removing tiles as you dont know until they start coming off generally tile removal is part of most full bathrooms re-furbs so it is easy to hide the price in your overall quote. hope this helps you
