porcelain base pics

Hi all,

uploaded some pics of the base for 400x400 porcelain tiles from new concrete screed to some sort of tile which i was wondering if i could tile straight onto they are quite thick as there is a hole in one of the corners and they must be at least 20mm thick but the floor is solid with no visible movement. I realise i need movement joint where two floors meet but what other things to take into consideration, there is a slight height variation between the two but its not stepped its more like a radius and was thinking of just back skimmimg those tiles then levelling off again.

Do these look like the quarry tiles sitting on sand that you mentioned before that could be the original floor maybe?

They are quarry tiles steve.....if that is just a crack in the floor then this is the perfect job to use ditra on...but if it is two separate floors then an expansion joint will be needed but you can still use ditra but install the joint within the ditra as well...but one thing to check first though is that those old tiles are well fixed..because they used to be just laid on a sand/cement screed and but jointed, so check for loose tiles first....the ditra will accommodate the cracks in the substrate etc....transferring to the tiles...

Dave the first pic is where new meets old about 7.5m2 each and pic three is where it meets the wall so you can almost see the substrate of the quarry tiles which looks like what you stated sand, cement but the tiles are absolutly solid does it still need ditra mat?

assuming tiles are solid maybe you could throw some self leveller down to get heights the same then tiling on one flat surface...

The reason i recommended ditra is because it will allow for expansion in the old butt jointed floor.....you can tile onto the floor as it is but i would use flexi adhesives and grout....make sure you get those tiles as clean as you can before tiling onto them....
