Hey folks,

I will be ply wooden three rooms tommorrow in 9mm Plywood over chipboard sub floor.

I would rather do this with a screw than use nails, can any of you guys reccommend suitable screws?

Nearest retailer to me would be screwfix.

I was thinking 30mm screw as I think chipboard is 19 or 20mm.

any comments would be appreciated.

Normally I would use a screw that is not threaded all the way as this apparently allows the screw to pull the ply into the floor boards tighter in comparrison to the fully threaded screw.

Does anyone have any comments on this theory?

yes,use 12mmexterior ply.screw it down at 300mm intervals in a grid type pattern.Screwfix do a turbo screw for this its 25mm length perfect.you wont go wrong with these screws.Prime floors before you put adhesive down and use a flexi adhesive such as PCI flexi rapidset,also use flexi grout.

Hi Mate, I was always taught to pilot drill my ply before laying as, as you rightly say it has a tendency to "lift" and leave a void underneath. If you pilot drill to the width of your chosen screw shank, you are then clamping the board to the floor.

It takes a little longer but you actually have less "driving" to do and the screws go in much quicker and straighter.

I do believe there are now screws specially designed to achieve this clamping effect without pilot drilling but I can't remember what they are called and I think they are quite expensive.

I use exterior grade twin thread screws and just drive them straight in..no probs with lifting boards...its all down to technique i guess.....

I Just stand on the board while drilling it. No chance it's going to lift 14 stone of rippling muscle.

Hi Grumpy,

I just got you comment. I actually do it that way too . I preffer to pilot and always have done. There is less risk of driving though your fingers this way to (took half a finger tip of onece, ouch!). The screw I used were suppose to be easy for driving straight through wood but, this was deffo not the case especialy at only 30mm length.

i have a Senco Duraspin DS275 18 volt collated screw gun, fires thousands of screws in per hour. Many diff lengths of screw available.
Not cheap at around £280.00 - but will pay for itself in time saved in no time if you do a lot of over-boarding

Hi Grumpy, I think the screws you are thinking about are Goldscrew Plus or Turbogold from Screwfix, pretty reasonably priced. Coco.
