Taking on an employee??

Hi all,

Im at a point now where I am ready to expand and see if taking on an apprentice or labourer will make me more money.

As i see it i have two options,
1) an apprentice who i train up and put through their NVQ's and presume they will go out on their own after a few years of crappy pay but good training.

2) A retired bloke who comes when i need them, ie floors and big jobs, reliable, handy but never be a tiler...

Any advice on pay, reliability or previous experiences??

First thing to do Dave is have a look at the what used to be the DTI website (www.berr.gov.uk) and look at http://www.berr.gov.uk/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/index.html

This gives guidance about being an employer. Not something to be rushed into now a days, IMO.

I had several guys working for me in my old business, and i would never ever do it again, and definitely not tiling, think hard about it, paying them holidays, pension etc, and them messing up a tiling job...

Had the same with so called plasterers ( I'm a plasterer myself) putting their work right just not worth the hassle, but you could go down the subcontract way, again the goverment have tightened up. Your prices would have to increase to cover the extra overheads

Who's the question for shaney, Myself I use the saturday as an over overspill just incase I fall behind a job. Believe me I've had my share of weekend work, nowadays I like em free

Hi Dave. just like Whitebeam I am a plasterer and down through the years have had employees on the books and on contract. For me it meant I could take on the bigger jobs hence it kept me working and at times make some nice money .Nowadays I am trying to slow things down a little and just operate with one other employee (one of the only wortwhile lads I took on in the last 5 years )
Anyway and this might help you I sometimes need an extra hand and the way it works over here ( Cork,Ireland) some of the lads on benifits are allowed work app 20 hours a week and still retain their full benifits .So I roster my work in such a way (lifting boards ,external work etc ) that i can bring in a guy for the 19-20 hrs a week ,I dont have to pay full cont etc and its all above board.Maybe such a scheme works up your way .Have a chat with an accountant,
