| Old Tiles on Plasterboard | | ello gents,
I just got a job today to start on 2nd Jan but was a bit miffed when I got there because the old tiles are still on the customer's wall. It's only a small bathroom but the walls are nearly 3.5m high. There are old (about 15 years) 4" white tiles up to waste level around part of the bathroom and then higher up around the bath that has a shower over it. It's a terrible bathroom at the moment but will look good when I'm done.
HOWEVER, I told him I'd charge him £120 to take all the tiles off (about 5m sq) but I am now having nightmares about the plasterboard falling apart. He told me I could just tile over the old tiles but I said no way because there'd be an abnormal lip where the old tiles were because he now wants the whole room doing. I told him if I started to take the tiles off and the plasterboard was crumbling then I'd stop immediately and he'd have to get a builder in to make the walls good.
What experience do you guys have of this? Should I have walked off? Have I cocked up?
Come on grumpy and gaz, give me a rollicking.
Cheers,
etc | |

#3 | | Tilersforums Black Prince | It's a tiling job, not a builders job.
Work on a platform of some kind, and replace plasterboard if needed.
Whats the point of giving away an easy job and good money to someone else ?

| Grrrrrrr - exactly not what I wanted to do because I'm worried about what's going to be hiding behind the tiles. Built box sections before - not done replacement walls. | | |

| I'm a tiler too etc.tiling but i had exactly the same problem though the wall wasn't as high. It took me a day to strip the tiles off and a couple of hours to reboard with plasterboard. I was working on stud partitions and I had never done it before. it came out really well, I was very pleased.
See attached picture.

#8 | | Tilersforums Black Prince | Replacing plasterboard is very easy to do, the only thing is stripping away the oldif needed is a messy job, other than that easy money, unless you don't need it.
Also, I'd call bricking a wall building job, where as replacing plasterboard is tiling prep work, and doing it yourself, you know its going to be right
