Use a six foot level to check..

Dewalt or the bosch ones seem popular, I have one but it's not one of the mainstream ones and cost £100 but works for me..

Another option when no laser and staff are to hand, is the datum line and string method.

or you could flood the floor the last dry patch is your high point
