Painted tiles

Hi all

If a tile has been painted on with tile paint and then a few years latter been painted over again with emulsion and its in a bathroom what would be the best way to prep the area ready for new ceramic tiles?

Ps: the exsisting tiles and paint all seem to be firmly fixed and with know flaking edges etc.

id be very careful here,id recomend removing the old tiles ,or walk away

No doubt about it, remove the tiles or you will have major problems

Get them off - if you can, get yourself an SDS drill with chisel function. It wips them off in no time....

Thanks a lot men i will suggest she has them removed, when i done the quote i did say they might have to come off because of the paint, she said she doesn't want them off because they are on plasterboard and she don't wanna have to pay for the cost of repairs if any damage is done while removing.....she also said she is happy to remove all the paint off the surface, i told her that removing the paint might not be enough as the chemicals in the paint have probably weakened the sticking power of both the grout and the adhesive behind.

Have i told her the right thing??

Oh yeah she is a high ranking police officer and her husband is the cheif of police in central London so i have to be a bit carefull here lol

What I would do is explain to her the correct way of doing things and the consequences if they are not done the right way. If she accepts that, then get an SDS drill as I have explained and take them off. It leaves hardly any damage to the walls behind.

If she is still adamant that she wants it done her way, then either walk away or tell her you cannot guarantee the work and do it the way she wants.

Thanks Concept, i will deffo get one of them SDS drills (what one do you use mate?) i have allways taken tiles off with a hammer and chisel....very time consuming.

Will explain that she either has them all removed or i won't do the job, this sounds like the safest option to me.

Bosch GBH/DRE. You can get the cordless one (costs a packet) or a corded one. Go for the 110v, it costs about 110 quid, then you will need to by the tile chisel. Thats another tenner.

Well worth it though, especially if you have to remove floor tiles....

if the tiles werent painted id go straight over them ,the paint will stop your glue from adhering to the tiles properly,also they have been paintad again with emulsion which in time im sure that will start peeling off as well,dont forget this is a bathroom ,loads of condensation ,how long has the paint been on the tiles and how many times have they been painted before

Hi Mate.... thanks for that. The paint has been up for a couple of years. The thing is She has told me that if required she is happy to remove all the paint leaving me with just the tiles. The tiles look very solid and had they not been painted over i would have happily tiled straight over them.

Basically mate If she removed all the paint of the tiles, and then i prepared the surface as you normally would for tile on tile do you think it would then be safe?
