Default using out of date adhesive

Hi Y'all, in relation to my earlier post, would anyone use out of date adhesive products and if you would how long out of date would you consider. I know things don't knacker overnight but is there margin of safety that you would use as a rule of thumb ? If an adhesive was good for 12 months and was manufactured April 2010 would you use it in May for example. Your thoughts will be most illuminating. Cow.

i wouldnt use it ,if it fails for any reason you will have no comeback on the guarantee if the adhesive has one ,would imagine they would just tell you that you shouldnt have used it in the first place

I agree with you Brian, I wouldn't use it but if it expired at midnight June 30th it wouldn't become useless July 1st would it ? I just wondered what the safe time is or is it best to only use something that has at least, say, 3 months left on before use ??? Cow.

hi cowgomoo, yea i can see what your saying but i have had trouble with two of the big companys with there products so i am now very cautious as imo the guaantees that they gave were absolutly useless well at least they were when i put the complaints in but i got good back up from one of the big tile companys and came out smelling of roses lol

Why do they go off anyhow? What's in there to go off? It really annoys me, as often I only need really small amounts at a time... Can't it have some sort of preservative in it? Bit like laddering tights, smacks of cynical money making... pfff..

Get the standard set flexible adhesive which can last a good few hours.

no, I meant go out of date... it's not food is it? What's in there to get out of date and turned into something useless?

And that means it's fixable, I reckon anyhow.. it's not organic matter, is it, if it lasts when mixed with water and cured and exposed to all weathers then surely it should be able to last when in a dry state? Been thinking about that on and off for ages, just doesn't seem right.

They start to set in the bag.. slightest minuscule of moisture over a certain time will harden the adhesive.. but eventually adhesive does just harden in the bags.. hence a shelf life.. but they always last longer than 12 months.. if the adhesive has no hard lumps then it will be fine..if it does have lumps then it is goosed as it has started to set in the bag and will harden to quickly once mixed with water... or in some cases not harden at all..if the setting agent has expired..

As above the safe bet is not to use a well expired bag..

It depends what adhesvie it is. C2 class has got much more chemicals then C1 and these chemicals can be out of date. Another thing is health. Adhesives contain hexavalent chromium which is carcinogen. Standard is not more then 0,0002% of it. Manufacturers use reducers to make low content of this substance. These reducers can be out of date too.
