Default How to make a mat well ?

Hi - I'm tiling my downstairs corridor at the moment and was thinking about adding a mat well. How are these normally done ?
I was thinking of making a border from wood and tiling up to this and then caulking the join - is this a good idea or not?

    What dimensions are normal?

Do you go flush to the exterior door or leave a 100mm or so gap around the well ?

    Thanks for any advice....

    Ed

Here are a few views of the hall/corridor. I've bought a square of matting that is a metre by a metre. Looks about 20mm thick so should be able to plonk it in a hole direct onto the ditramat ? Or should I cut out the ditramat and put in a ply base ?

I would normally put an L shaped trim around the mat.You could leave the ditra but taking it out will mean more room for the mat.Whether you remove the ditra of not make sure you silicon around the lower edges to stop any wet getting under tiles. You'll have to centre on door too, leave about 4" or so in from front frame.

As above for me, but I prefer to have my mat sitting slightly above the tile.....

I think a combination of all the previous posts.
Mat slightly higher than tiles - to protect metal edge.
L shaped metal trim - to protect tile edge
Membrane under mat - to protect subfloor (if wood)
Silicone seal from trim to membrane - to stop moisture ingress.
