Default DIY Tips : What is plaster

What is Plaster

When the dry plaster powder is mixed with water, it re-forms into gypsum. Plaster is used as a building material similar to mortar or cement. Like those materials plaster starts as a dry powder that is mixed with water to form a paste, and liberates heat and then it hardens. Unlike mortar and cement, plaster remains quite soft after drying, and can be easily manipulated with metal tools or even sandpaper. These characteristics make plaster suitable for a finishing, rather than a load-bearing material.

Plaster can be tiled upon but unlike plasterboard, it does need a couple of coats of Acrylic primer if cement based powdered adhesives are to be used, as the chemical compounds in plaster will react against the chemical compounds in cement based powdered adhesives.

Ready mixed tubbed adhesive does not have the same chemical reaction as does cement based powdered adhesive, so priming then is not a must, but it will do no harm if primer is used.
