The paint really needs to come off, (sorry!!!) a coarse sandpaper is what you will need. What size and type of tiles are you tiling your bathroom with?

Just take the paint off back to the plaster skim underneath(try to remove all the paint), if it's painted plasterboard, be careful not to rub the paperface off the board.

As Bri says, the paint needs to come off. Otherwise you will be relying on the bond between the paint and the wall to keep the tiles where they should be. Much better to take it off and do it right

give the walls a key ,meaning scatch the paint in lines about six inches apart, then prime with a sbr primer, bal bond or similar, use a powdered adhesive, i have tiled many many many times on walls that have been painted ,and never had a single fail.

Defo remove as much paint as pos' but most important is to use a cement based flexible adhesive and not a ready mixed.

I found a good tool to remove old paint. Called a Razor Scraper...has an angled head that holds changeable 4 inch blades. If you hold it right it will scrape the paint off down to the plaster or with plasterboard will just take off the thinnest layer of paper...bloody sharp though...ended up in January with my customer taking me to A & E as I sliced right into the knucke of my thumb...luckily it was the other hand so could still do the job when let out. Ouch!!!
