trusting a new tiler?

I am planning on expanding the company and taking on a new tiler. I take pride in my work and take care on every job. I have always taken on someone who has been reccommended or known before but everyone is either busy or retired. I am currently trying to work out a interview process to hire the correct person for the job. Has anyone got any realised ideas?

Ask for a portfolio of previous work and testimonials from past customers. Ask a few technical questions about adhesives, grout, substrate preparation and fixing methods etc, any tiler worth hiring will provide/answer with ease.

My advice would be Dont employ anyone!!

I was going to do a mini test- the only thing you cannot guarantee is that the tiler will carry on that level of work. All materials will be supplied by me so I won't have to worry about that.

They only real way is to have them work beside you for a month so you can see how they work.

I know a couple of tilers who hav'nt got portfolios but they have been tiling for about 30 years each, so don't necessarily let that put you off.

My aim is to down tools. The only problem with our trade is most people do it to be self-employed and the good tilers always have work lined up. I don't do building sites, I hate the fact its just get them down yesterday.

Hello,think about the type of work you do and the way you plan a job,then ask him/her to do the same. ie,how would you tile a shower area starting from unskimmed plaster board using plain light weight ceramics,or how do you tile on top of 20sqm of wooden floor boards. If you deal with mostly stone ask questions on sealing/grouting/cleaning.Words like pva,ready mixed,ply,acid,dot and dab,etc are proberbly not want you want to hear.But i dont know how you work so you can make up questions that relate to what you work with.

Also, if theres a horse tied up outside and he/she is wearing spurs & a big hat i dont think i would employ them.
