Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
Hi, I am looking to tile natutal stone, most probably slate, over existing mosaic tiles over a Large area. The sub floor is sound, but slightly flexible Ply under the existing tiles. It is in a commercial premises which was only re-furbed 3 years ago, including the floor, however has experienced very high volumes of traffic and hence needs something new. Provided i use the correct flexible floor adhesives and grout can any one think of any reasons I should not do this???

IMO, you are asking for a disaster to happen... For a long lasting job then start a fresh..sort out the flexing and fix direct and not on top.

Re: Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
as above , strengthen the floor , remove existing tiles ,new floor

Re: Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
as above, take them up and sort the floor,a natural stone tile is hard, and will crack with movment, there is not much flexability with it

Re: Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
As Dave say's.... strip out and start again. A commercial floor with lot's of foot-fall will take a lot of punishment and will need to be up to the job.

Re: Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
Mosaic tiles will deal with the stress in the floor far better than slate as Dave says you must start again and can not compare the existing to slate and think it will be ok If the floor is going to get heavy traffic you can not take any chances preperation is very important.

Re: Laying stone over existing mosaic floor
as all above,
wouldn't risk in heavy traffic area to lay slate on top of mosaic, especially when you putting extra load, (slate is so .....Heavy)
you might find even more bouncing when applied solid heavy tiles, and then cracks appear, and loose tiles, and you wish you could start all over again, but it will be to late, so why not no start now properly
