Re: school boy error
I've done similar my self. New build with large bathroom c/w vertical borders either side of the basin. I left a gap for one and not the other and didn't notice till I was doing the cuts into wall. At least at that point I could still peel the tiles back off.

Did a whole bathroom like that once Luckily I managed to talk the customer into keeping it, which included a good discount on their invoice.

Re: school boy error
Know the feeling mate.
I just built a solid 4x2 frame with ledge around a bath, sheeted and then screwed to the max. I thought I had done well as I did alot of repair work to a rotten floor before skimming a wall and did this all in a few hours ready to be tiled the next day.
Suddenly after packing up my gear, I realised that I had boxed in the basin taps behind the bath
Not a bigy but, I felt gutted as I had sealed all the edges etc and was off to a great start. Just had to take it all of again today before tiling.
