    Default hardiebacker installation help

    Good afternoon

Before i start i would jut like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who has helped me on my project so far. I can see the end now and shouldn't have to many more questions left...

I have decided to use 6mm hardiebacker cement boards to board up my box section ready for tiling. I appreciate that 6mm is not recommended for walls however i will put so many noggins and strength members in the frame that its almost going onto a timber sheet. I'm unable to use 12mm as this will cause an overlap at the bath end and cause complications when tiling. The area to tile is 2.6m x 0.95m and I'm fitting 10mm 400x600 porcelains. The sink and toilet mounts to this box section.

When fixing these boards should i leave a gap between the wall, floor and each board? If so should i use a sealant to fill the gap? I will be using alkaline resistant tape where the boards join with SPF adhesive.

    Any good pointers welcome.

    Thanks

Just fill with silicone for added protection..

If you are after a water proof installation then tanking is the way.

    hi

you should leave a 6mm gap from the floor, ceiling and adjacent walls if its hardiebacker 250. then fill with sillicone as said above

Right..... i have started to fix the hardiebacker board and I'm a little concerned that the washers i was given by my local tile company are not the right ones because no mater how tight you tighten the screw they still sit on the surface of the board. Is this normal practice?

I use those washers when fixing cement lined poly-core boards, such as Wedi & Marmox. I would not use them when fixing Hardie or No More Ply cement backer boards. I think your tile shop has incorrectly advised you.

Thanks for the info. I will remove them and just use screws then.

It just goes go to show that even experts get it wrong from time to time as the advice and materials came from a very well regarded tile supplier in my area.
