    Default expansion joints

    Hi all,

For the past year i have done alot of work for a shop fitter and i always use expansion joint every 5m. However on my travels i tend to some times see other tiler have not used them. Just wondering why not aprt from the obvious. or is it due to the fact they use a single part flexi adhesive?

I think sometimes when one isnt used, that they have used an uncoupling membrane such as ditra instead. I have seen this done anyway. Not sure if it is good practice though to do that instead of a specific expansion joint/ profile

Uncoupling membrane goes hand in glove with expansion joints in my book, not one or the other

phil hits the nail on the head!!

expansion joints are for structural movement/settlement
de-coupling membrane is for lateral expansion/contraction

2 different impacts, 2 different solutions..

I stop uncoupling membrane at expansion joints and start it again the other side of joint.

Quite right Doug, uncoupling membrane should not span expansion joint. I break under the exp joint

phil i meant the flex edge strip to bridge each side of the joint,(waterproofing) i didnt mean to just lay it right over M8
