Silica Dust Warning click on the link to view video

i thought id post this up as i didnt realise that the sillica dust that is exposed when cutting hardibacker boards can cause lung cancer and lung disease...there is a really good shearing tool that is shown and it minimises the dust too!! better

the warning video above, is from the hardibacker website....

    hope this helps

Granite,Sandstone and quartzite have high silica contents as do most fine wall grouts(silica flour) its why it is very important to wear a mask when buffing down your wall tiling after grouting or when using your grinder for cutting

i'm definately going to invest in a more suitable face mask! your lungs are so susceptable to damage in this job when you consider all the mixing, cutting, grinding, ripping out etc. i know health and safety can be a real pain sometimes but its there to protect us we and need to look after ourselves in this game.

Ed! Have you not read the sticker on it before? I cant believe some cut this with a grinder, the dust must be appalling. I have a great mask with some really god filters for this stuff, funnily enough its a Scott mask, must be a good un huh!

you can buy a tool from hardie that scribes the boards then turn the board over and break the joint same as plasterboard

I voiced my concern about cutting hardie board on here quite a while ago. I read the warning on the label, they don't put them there for no reason. Especially in this age of litigation, I try to cut outside down wind from the dust, using a suitable respirator.

No doubt in the future we may find people claiming invalidity, as happened in the cotton industry (byssinosis) or the building trade ( asbestos related diseases) time will tell
