Unibond adhesive
Hi all,
Ive just been in B&Q to pick up some plumbing bits and was nosing in the tiling section as you do. I noticed that all the Unibond powdered adhesives stating that it is suitable to use on chipboard flooring! 15 year guarentee, there is even a tubbed flexible wood floor adi that states its for tiling on wooden/chipboard floors. Has anyone (trades) ever used this stuff and how did you get on?
I would normally over board chipboard with no more ply or similar as I dont think chipboard is a suitable subtrate for tiling direct just wanted to know your opinions.
Thanks in advance for you replies.

Re: Unibond adhesive
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
two problems with it
first chipbord is just that, its compressed wood particles. when you adhere to the surface the board can delaminate particularily if it gets wet for some reason
secondly , theres no structurals stability on chipboard and it will flex when you walk on it, not a problem untill you tile it and then you have issues with the tiles moving against each other and breaking the grout out or cracks appearing where the boards join
it does get done but its not reccomended
I know nothing I havent learnt

Re: Unibond adhesive
Its just bad practice as far as im concerned. The chipboard will be wet/damp as soon as the adhesive touches it. Just found it mad that they actualy state its fine on the bag, how many novices or DIYers are going to come unstuck ( excuse the pun ) using this. Im just curious to know if anyone has used it successfully or unsuccessfully for that matter and how long its lasted.

Re: Unibond adhesive
I used tubbed unibond adhesive in our downstairs loo when we moved in (not knowing any better and wanting to cover up the horrible dpm that was there) but it was laid on to a solid dpm over concrete. so far there have been no failures, but that could be due to luck and the fact that the loo doesn't get much traffic. I'll let you know how well it stuck the tiles when I take a bolster and chisel to them in the coming months to lift them up so I can replace them.

Re: Unibond adhesive
Liz I would gladly do it but I do not have the time right now, I have made a vow not to take any more work on or this training facility will never open. I am here at 5.30 am until very late, I have 10 bathroom suites to put together and fit by the end of today, five done and five to go.
Work work work.............love it.
Not had a beer for 4 weeks now................

Re: Unibond adhesive
are you able to click Go Advanced when posting a reply Bob? the smileys can be found when you've clicked Go Advanced. not sure whether you're restricted due to smartphone tho.

You probably wont have the drop down menu to add smilies, but if you know the code for them they'll still work. Problem is if I type the codes now they'll show as smilies and not show you the code.
:-lol: without the dash is the laughing smilie, :-) without the dash is a smiling face smilie, :-thumbsup: or :-thumbsdown: without the dashes are thumbs up or down. And so on.

Re: Unibond adhesive
Ah yes I forgot I could type in the code to get the smileys.
On my Blackberry I get exactly what I see on my Laptop now but the trouble is the trackpad, as soon as you move accross to the smileys you've touched outside the reply window and disabled the flashing curser.
Also since the new layout (plumbers forum as well) the threads with multiple pages have the title all blurred up with two lines of writing on top of each other for some reason?
