    Default Vinyl tile adhesive

    Hi

I've taken up some old vinyl tiles on a screeded floor and the adhesive is as sticky as the day it was put down.

It's an amber colour and so not a bitumen based adhesive.

Can I lay porcelain tiles straight on top, or do I need to treat it somehow, or even use a solvent to remove it?

    Thanks

You can use a heat gun to soften it some more and scrape up the residue, then solvent to clean up any left residue.. what substrate is it.?

    It's a sand cement screed.

I've read elsewhere of forum members recommending a primer?

I've got most of them up now.

With the exception of one or two which had quite a bit of adhesive, the majority have come up ok, leaving the screed a brown colour but without any residue which you can scrape off.

Is it still worth going over it with a solvent cleaner?

I guess the answer is it wouldn't hurt?

You can now slurry coat or use a latex leveller to give a good bonding coat to tile to.
