Nowt that a hammer and chisel won't sort out, that's the thing with natural split slate.. it can be chisel'd off flat if required..

Thats exactly what he told them Andy,

I've never laid slate before but its interesting about the thickness and the hammer and bolster...

I never pointed out any faults to her I just said "I like your new floor"
It was a local handyman who did it.

Maybe its not such a bodge then if slate comes in differing thicknesses (makes sense I suppose) but you're right mike, I would have sorted them in their seperate thicknesses before laying, I wouldn't have left steps like that.

You learn something on here every night.

Not so handy that handyman!! You've gotta know what you're doing working with slate. It looks like it's been finished ok...clean off and sealed. Just a shame he didn't take the time to sort the thickness of tiles before hand

Forgive my ignorance, was that 'uncalibrated' slate in my picture?

    Eg/ slate of differing thicknesses?

Most definetely not Bob,i'v done this before and it works a treat.
It also means you can lay slate rather quick too.
As long as they are stuck properly there will be no probs.

I've always bolstered after grouting. Always feel it won't break of more than I want it to.

    mmm.....

Sounds like there's more to laying slate than I thought, is it normal to bolster then, is that how its done?

I'll happily tile a bathroom in ceramic, porcelain and make a very good job of it etc, but I know my limits, (I'm only a plumber), I've yet to even lay Travertine, if I can't lay it without lippage then I don't lay it.

with riven uncalibrated slate it's very difficult to get zero lippage Bob, where these lips occur you just take a hammer and sharp bolster and split the lip off, I always have my bolster pointing up to the surface/ace of the tile so it doesn't knap it downwards.

Now we are talking Doug, Knapping, flint, slate, who cares? this is how our ancestors worked with stone.the only difference is we knap slate/ stone to enhance our kitchen floors etc, our ancestors knapped flint to eat/ survive, necessity is the mother of invention

the thing is though in my experience, slate can easily delaminte into two peices (20mm piece of slate turns into two 10mm pieces of slate)

so bolstering can also give you a little extra work.

best thing in my opinion is to explain to customer that you will try to sort tiles out into sizes etc or grade but, at the end of the day the type of tile they have choses in of varying depth and will leave some lippage! afetr all it is in fact a feature of that specific tile and that why sheera is sold at 13 or 14 quid per square metre.

Many cusomters do actualy like that effect too
