Default Floor tiling with steel mesh sub floor?

Years ago my dad tiled his kitchen floor using a steel mesh nailed to the existing floor boards and the floor seems to have stood the test of time well.

Does anyone else use this technique?
Is there any reason why people use ply instead of the steel mesh? As with the mesh you only raise the floor level by a few mm plus the tile.

There are probably a couple of guys that remember that technique, was it the chicken wire......

Things have also moved on I'm afraid

Probably an expanded mesh in a solid sheet rather than linked or woven like chicken wire.

They still sell the stuff at builders yards.
Been speaking to somone else and they said the tiler that did his house 13years ago used that method and his floors are still like they were laid yesterday.

If no one on here has tried it or can tell me the reasons why it no longer seems to be common practice looks like i might just go for the 12mm ply ontop of the floor boards.

more than likley died out due to a few failures or lack of people being able to do it right or cement sheet was cheaper but it does work well if done right expanding metal can also be used on walls to but is expensive
