Tiling floors in rooms with a change in level
Im working on a kitchen / family room where it is all open plan, except there is a step and a change in level.
I’m laying 60x60 porcelain floor tiles, but don’t know if I should try and line up and run the tiles through, or treat it as two separate rooms and set them out as such.
I’m also tiling the step.
I’ve attached a layout so you can see what I mean, as its quite complicated.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would treat it as one with edging trim on the step.

You have to set up the two area's as one. Visually, this will give you a better finish.

As above, its only 2 rooms so it will be easy to set out. Is the kitchen already in?

Re: Tiling floors in rooms with a change in level
Cheers guys
I thought you’d probably say that, but I’d almost talked myself out of doing it.
My only worry is that when I get one room right, the other wont look right. And I’m also hoping everything is square! I guess the main thing to concentrate on is running the lines up into the kitchen area?!?!
I’m actually working on it now. I’ve almost got the main room set out and am just about to move into the kitchen. I’m hoping it runs through ok and I’m not left with any stupid cuts or dodgy angles, else I might lose the will!! ;-)

Re: Tiling floors in rooms with a change in level
If I was doing that floor I would suggest a step edge tile so that it shows the step, otherwise as people walk out of the kitchen the step will be invisible to them and may cause an accident or injury. You can get many different colours and materials that will go with your tiles.

I like the step tiles idea, even with an edging strip it would be hard to see.

if you are setting out,use a staff(gauging rod)it will not take so long.
