Not the ones we had on here Dave, (adhesive spreaders) but since I started tiling in the days before any kind of cutting machines (manual or electric) all we had was a scriber for walls, and pin hammer and tungsten tip chisel for floors. I have already seen some amazing changes in this industry

Dead right Phil I can remember going to work with a TS30, a small canvas havasack with a few hand tools AND my bait box in - that was it And you could still do your job

Nowadays my Renault Master van isn't big enough

So I think the progression in the last 20 years has been incredibly significant already I can even remember tile adhesive being frowned upon, but boy it's quicker than S&C

Imagine sending a newbie to work with a 'scriber'.....LOL

I did a 3 day course when starting out and can hold my own with all of the time served tilers I have worked with.
Also there are time served old school tilers who are not up to much either.

tiling on sites nibbling the L shaped cuts round sockets with a pencil scribe and a pair of nips, or a rod saw.

as the rest have said ive all ready seen the tiling industry change so much in the last 20 yrs i realy dont know where we will be in another 20yrs, perhaps we will all be driving around with water jet machines in the back of our vans, or maybe self adhesive ceramic tiles that you peel off a backing and stick on the wall (only avalible from B and Q of course)lol

less confusing adhesive choices , cement based floor adhesive standardised to minimum s1 rating no exceptions, wall adhesive cement based minimum s1 rated ,would reduce the amount of tile failures 25%

talking about changes in addy reminded me off the painting game, ive seen some changes in paint formulations, I was taught to paint with traditional formulations which was a skilled job, everytime they reformulated to make paint easier to apply they made it worse for traditional hands to apply

theres been a change this year with the 2010 paints, the paint has gone back to the old days and will only suit proper painters. those that declare it to be rubbish that cant be applied are showing their lack of skill

tiling will go the same way, its gone through the easy to apply stage with tubbed addy, but that doesnt suit the new material to be fixed so those with the traditional skills will have no problem fixing stone etc wheras those that only fix with tub will fall behind and drop out of the game

so I think the future in tiling is continual development of fixing methods that will exlude the unskilled
I know nothing I havent learnt

one thing that bothers me is if tiles may become unecessary,or replaced with some other material that is not layed in tile form. After all tiles are mostly an aesthetic finish.

i also sometimes think the same, but when you consider the romans were tiling fantastic mosaic floors 400 years ago i think tilings still got a good couple of hundred years left

How about Friday Toonz built in to your wetsaw,in response to buddy that took a three day course and can hold his own with old schoolers, you must be a freakin genius,I've taken a few courses over the past 28 years but mostly all my knowledge and "tricks"come from actually being on the job, trial and error, and to this day I'm still learning from guys that have been setting longer than me.I wish I could have taken a three day course and be where I am today, sure would have saved a lot of wear and tear on the old bod.

Rubi (who else) are developing a new machine. Its called "Robthebuildertiler" and works by cutting tiles with a mallet n chisel (laser guided of course) then slapping them onto a wall with a dob of adhesive. Magic. Only £179.99 from all good JMC stores.

The future for tiling? Rubi will be obsolete, and Sigma will be the only brand used by professionals.
