Discuss 110w transformers in the Tiling Forum at TilersForums; its a stupid question i no but does anyone no why transformers are so heavy ? one guy on site said its full of sand and that you just undo ...

    Default 110w transformers

    its a stupid question i no but does anyone no why transformers are so heavy ? one guy on site said its full of sand and that you just undo the screws and tip it out ? my point is that is there any need for the added weight and why ?

    well iam really glad i asked that question ha ha !! wot a response !! my right forearm is like mike Tyson's while my left for arm is like a pipe cleaner ? iam gonna try and tip wot-ever is in it out 2mrow ! c wot it is !

    yeah no probs mate ! wasn't really gonna tip it out ! ha ha just wanted to no y its so heavy ! copper wire that would make alot of sense as to why there so expensive then i guess..

    Someone on site said "its full of sand, undo it and tip it out?" You need to undo the top half of his head and tip a brain in.

    My biggest one is 5kva, now that is heavy.

    The weight comes from the Tar insulation as neale said.. then you have the weight of the transformer itself..

    All mine are 3KVAs one of them is really noisy, and was told when it's on to hit the side with a big hammer to stop plates inside from vibrating just haven't had the bottle to try it.

    Dont hit it, get it checked by an electrician or buy a new one.

    mine are also 3KVAs and are 18kgs !!!! its ridiculous. you can get a light weight transformer around 10 kgs i think but its almost double in price.

    At a guess i would say that it needs to be earthed ,never gave it much thought before.Although my back has screamed out a few times

    Your transformers are called isolation transformers the input voltage is 230v and output is 110 v. There is a primary and secondary winding which is copper wire they are isolated from each other and the voltage is developed with the magnetic field. The copper windings are wrapped around an iron core which is very heavy. Larger transformers for hotels eg weigh several tonnes.
