What to lay before tiles?
Hi, I am new to tiling and about to embark on our first serious attempt at a bathroom.
My question (which I am sure has been asked lots before!) is this!
The existing bathroom had a carpetted floor which i have taken up which leaves chipboard flooring. What is the best thing to do with this before tiling?
Is it to remove the chipboard and put down plywood? If so, what thickness? I would prefer not to put down 18mm as this may make it to high! Is there a particular type of ply to use ie)marine
Or can I put down concrete board? If so does this go on to the chipboard?
Many thanks in anticpation of someone helping!

Re: What to lay before tiles?
I would prob put hardy backer board on floorboards if there is no deflection in the floor,,and if you use ply it can be no less than 15mm and requires correct priming before tiling.Chipboard is useless to tile on.Just hang around and I am sure these guys will give you very accurate info

Re: What to lay before tiles?
As Russ says 15mm minimum for over laying. In an ideal world taking up the chipboard would be the way to go and replace with ply and add extra noggins to the joists if its needed to remove any 'bounce' from the existing floor. However in the real world its not always possible to remove it completely as it does tend to run under stud walls to other rooms.

Re: What to lay before tiles?
Hardie backer cemented & screwed down would be good, as long as there is no bounce on floor.
If this is floating floor, then consider something other than tiles, likely to crack

Re: What to lay before tiles?
where two bits of ply meet then put a noggin in between the joists at the point.so that both edges of the ply sit on and are screwed to the noggin..
