    Default The Harray Potter....

    Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd share my most recent job with you all for it's individuality and unusual choice of materials

I was asked by Andrew, a local artisan - pottery_web_site - to tile out the walls of his new shower room, but certainly not with run of the mill wall tiles - roof slates!

Not having ever fixed roof slates on walls before ( I 'have' fixed them on floors before with great success!) I wasn't sure what the aesthetics of the finished job would be like.....

    However, forwards and onwards....

I was then asked to fix quite a few glazed medieval style tiles which were actually made by my customer in his pottery and also a stone 'gargoyle' plaque.

Due to the weight of the stone plaque, I mechanically fixed it to the wall as I was apprehensive of the strength suitability of adhesive on it's own

Anyway, about 2 or 3 days into the job I started to see the initial vision of my customer and accepted that this was going to look pretty unique, especially taking into account the artistic surroundings that the room was in

Andrew then supplied with copper clout nails to decorate the pre-drilled fixing holes of the slates.....

Went back today to silicone around the mirrors that I had fixed yesterday.

    See what you think....

I love it, just wondering how you managed to make it waterproof through the nail holes, did you maybe fill the holes with silicon before knocking the copper clouts in?

Exactly Doug mate dab of clear silicone in each hole smoothed flat to ensure good seal and then copper nails fixed through before it set

Andrew is quite excited for when the clouts turn green.....

Fired Earth have been selling this look for years under thier chiselled edge floor range ( but without the holes).
Its very difficult to comment on a 'look' that is so personal to a client and I suppose that's what makes our work so interesting.
I'am in the category of - there is something that keeps my attention for the shower area - but goes towards 'job lot' for the rest of the room!
We did a similar job many years ago for the Craft House at the Gateshead Flower Festival - glazed roof tiles from Marley!
And on another job - a half tiled bath area in a cottage using sample tiles from around every tile shop in the world!! (they all had a price/label on the back).
A great thread - well done.

very different indeedy, not to sure on the slate shelves in the corner of the shower though. slate can be like a razor blade if broken snapped or leaned onto. the standard of work looks top notch.

    Cheers TJ

Job lot is exactly right - basically it was anything Andrew could find in his numerous outhouses
I know the pics don't show it very well but the junction between the slate and the 300x300 glazed cream under the window works very well as the chiselled edge gives a nice rounded edge detail to the tiles, especially as the tiles have a wavy edge
