tile onto chipboard or not ?

hi ! got a small job to do, bathroom floor, 4 meters. floor has little movement and is chipboard. normally i would overboard, but been to my local tile giant and he recommended a 2 part mapei adhesive and said there is no problem tiling over chipboard ? just in limbo at the min and not sure if i want to risk it ? just doesnt seem right to me ? any of you lot tile onto chipboard? tiles are ceramic.

I would overboard with NMP but I would want no deflection at all in the floor Tel.
He should not be telling you to tile over chipboard mate.

mmm ! interesting ... Thanks. never used nm ply yet but hate normal ply and want to stop using it but its so cheap ! is there much of a price difference with no more ply ?

You can also use hardi-backer 250 ( 6mm)..

will def over board ! anyone no where they stock either no more ply or hardy backer board in tyne and wear ? tile giant don't !

CTD and topps sell it.. they are on shields rd ..walker.

I use Hardie Backer 6mm. bond it to the floor with flexi adhesive and screw's holds everything together nicely

would i need to prime the chipboard before applying either hardy board or no more ply ?

Yes prime with sbr bond first allow to dry then I cut all the boards ready to fit then rapid set flexi use a 6mm trowel lay boards and then screw at 200 centres not 300 as with ply . then tape the joints with fibre tape and away you go.

To be fair, it is not always down to poorly educated staff. If memory serves me correctly, Mapei's little black book states that you can tile over Chipboard with Keraquick and Latex.

Best bet would be to use Ditra matting. Tile directly onto the Ditra. Been using it for years and never had a problem

never used Dita ! i used cement board on a small job months ago and nearly broke my drill ? its quite a mission drilling them screws in to concrete ? i had to use a counter sinker then screw in the screws so there flush with the boards , otherwise the screws stick up around2/3mm ? thank god it was only a small job otherwise id still be preparing the floor!! if i get a chipboard floor again that doesn't need strengthening i will use Dita as it looks easy quick to use and cut.

Ditra is for combatting lateral movement terry, it won't help strengthen the floor against deflection, (neither will hardibacker). You need to make sure there are plenty of noggins between the joists to eliminate deflection (bounce). Then use hardiebacker onto the chipboard.

I knock the screws with a hammer through the surface to make a dent then use an impact driver to drive them into the board. The dent helps with getting them started and also saves on the fingers as they dont slip off the screw and through the side of you finger!

think i will try 30mm galvanised roof nails after using thin set first . it does suggest this in hardies brochure and would save me a lot of time and energy plus hardies screws are expensive.
