    thats H&S for you

when I was a lad just starting out there was no health and safety

I was dangled off the roof of a high rise block in a bosuns chair to paint the outside kitchen windows

wire brushed asbestos gutters to line them with bitumen

put ladders up in a busy high st to paint facades with the ladder in the road and a traffic cone to warn the traffic

wandered around on no end of slate roofs with no harness and no safety barriers

waded through a soup of pidgeon muck and dead pidgeons to paint

painted lamp standards with a paint made from lead and boiled down bones

plus no end of unpleasant situations concerning dead body fluids and druggies

all of this work was for local authorities

bring on H&S and more power to them,no tradesman should have to risk life or ill health just to earn a living

A bloke i used to know was a plumber for years. Retired and a few laters got a cancer and died from asbestos from his job all those moons ago so some off it is a good idea. I do think they should let you have a choice off a disclaimer to sign or somthing along those lines.

in the early days you could do just that, you could sign a disclaimer absolving the contractor from all responsibility for your health and safety. this meant you could ignore and carry on

problem was a few large contractors got you sign one when you arrived on site

    so they were outlawed

dont knock H&S its there for your benefit

Ive had to attend the inquests off dead workmates as a witness , its not a pleasant experiance

    I agree with Mike.
H & S is all about your safety on site if we didnt have that then you are taking a risk everyday on site, If you are aware of every aspect then theres no risk of danger and you getting sued for not taking all the right precautions, you need H & S on site and some sites differ, but most of the big contractors dont want to get sued by someone who doesnt really care and then blame the main contractor for not having this or that on there site.
    Im for H & S, site awareness.

we all agree that health and safety at work is vitally important and at times very necessary but common sense is more important, ppe should reflect the risk involved in doing the work

it gets very silly when you are rolling ceilings in completed rooms and have to wear a hardhat and hi vis

we get the site agent to agree that as long as they are in the room with us and we put them on to go out onto the site we dont have to wear them

For my five pennies - Health and Safety is extremely important. Most of us want to stay alive, but a lot of H&S is actually about preventing injury - even simple accidents often mean 6 weeks off work, and I dont know about you (I am tough and can handle the pain) but I cannot handle the loss of 6 weeks work/money.

However. Too many in the building (etc) trade simply dont understand H&S and implement stupid rules that unnecessarily discredit good H&S practice. As per Mikethetile (above) what possible good reason is there for a high vis jacket indoors? Stupid rules - and there are even worse examples out there. My son works as a ground worker and one of his companies insist on them wearing gloves at all times - ok so gloves are an important protection - but a blanket rule like that is just ignorant and guaranteed to do nothing more than demoralise staff and reduce efficiency.

    Rant over .... lol!

H&S in the work place is important, but taken way too far in many occasions.
