Dodgy floor and customers.

Hi guys thanx for all past hints and tips. Think ill make a living yet.

Went to quote for a bathroom floor and walls last week and advised that existing tiles on floor would have to come up first. 2 days later customer phones back and says he cant get old adhesive off floor. I went around and old adhesive is about 2 cm thick on ply. I advised he get old ply off floor and replace with new ply. He asked me to tile straight over old adhesive i infromed him i wouldnt tile over old adhesive. It had been down about 11 years and was well stuck. It would of made a bad (worse than it already is) job of the floor. Should i off tiled on to old stuff or was i correct in advising him to put new ply down. Also any tips on running tiles up a bath.

You could of used the old ply if you could of got most of the old adhesive off or atleast level all over, but if it wouldn't come off, and it was 2cm deep\ high from the ply in places, then yes the ply would in my view need replacing.

Tiles running up a bath ?

Do you mean tiling a bath side and back panel ?

If so, I was going to do that in my bathroom, I would cut something like MDF or some good ply to the size of the bath sides, screwed together as in like a big box section, and tile as if it was just a wall, then silicone all around.

Only thing is if I then at a later date needed to get to the pipes under the bath, the silicone would have to be cut to remove the bath side, then remove silicone and re-seal it.

Geordie - Dont go near any bathroom with mdf it acts like a sponge if it gets wet and it will on the side of a bath.A solid frame built under the bath and ply with 9mm.4 screws with plastic covers for easy access later at each corner will do the trick.Beware the flexing cheapo plastic baths.

Thats pretty much what I did! Looks good too

......and I think you are right geordie, stick by your instincts.

MDF's fine if primed, grouted and sealed propperly.

Will bow to your greater knowledge about the mdf.I hate the stuff.Rather use ply anyday.

Nah, don't bow to my greater knoledge cos I don't have any, lol

I know a few people who have done a bath job like this on their own baths and none have had any problems, as long as everything has been grouted and sealed propperly.
