Generally by eye and tape measure with long straight edge (for floors).
Tiles with this type of edge are usually meant to look 'rustic'.

Hi Ant,as John says, though often even the wavy edge tiles will actually interloc giving a regular rather than totally random joint do yourself a trial dry setting out to achieve the best look...Regards Nigel

deffo have a dry run first, eyesight and packers for me
If for walls i use combination of eyes, spacers, wedges and spirit level.
they are floor tiles doug
cheers doug, not wanting to sound daft but what do i do with the straight edge?
place a tile at either end of your straight edge, then run your tiles along the length so that they butt up against your straight edge, and keep repeating this procedure on each course of tiles![]()

A string line can be used as well.. but working in bays will be the best for newcomers to wavey edge..![]()

Drop a string line down and as long as the string is in the centre of the joint it’s all good

I have 4.5m straight edge on my roof rack, handy for big floors,as tj says eyes, tape. Does anyone use the term rack o' th'eye it means you can sight accurately. Without string lines, straight edge etc. Sorry to but in on the thread. Maybe I should put this in one I have read about regional terms![]()

If unsure draw a grid on the floor at 2-3 course intervals, that shouls keep everything in check![]()

I wish I could get pics off my phone.
I finished a wavy edge job today (972 x 485 mm). I gridded (not sure whether that is good vocabulary) the floor and then fixed the tiles "by eye". I'll try and get the pics up here tomorrow.

I did a couple of wavy edge floors last Friday - 300x300 porcelain with the waviest edges i've ever used
Just use a straight edge and eye them in after that - some joints will be tighter than others, but don't panic coz thats 'the look' they're supposed to achieve![]()
