Being new to this tiling after doing my first training week and on to my second week next week.If you went in to a bathroom and it was all fitted in sink,toilet and bath would you tile around all the basin and toilet system then or take them of the wall and tile behind them for a better looking job.

hi mate its a much better finish removing them and re fitting,,however you will come across instances and customers who dont want the expense and will ask for you to cut round them. i generally price it higher in this case as the cutting is more time consuming and i point this out to the customer hoping to sway them in the direction of getting them removed

You could try to bring them forward slightly, have a chat on your training course about fixtures and fittings to the training staff

my bathrooms got a sink and a cooker and a fridge/freezer oh my god ive been getting washed in me kitchern lol

its wise to go on a plumbing course before attempting jobs like this

in the meantime chat up a local plumber to help you out

plumbers are a good source of tiling jobs so a bit of mutual backscratching goes a long way

It will always look better if everything is taken out rather than tiled around but like the above posts its not always a perfect world and some jobs you will have to tile around.

I don't touch plumbing as I'm not confident after I flooded a mates bathroom so I'm looking to do a course myself as it will be so handy to be able to move things and put them back without calling a plumber.

always easier, neater & quicker to remove the bathroom fittings . but you will find that this not always an option and you will have to get used to the fact its not all plain sailing.

The more fittings you can remove the easier and quicker the setting out is for cuts, also you won't have any awkward cuts or very little.
I would also advise a short plumbing course in bathroom installation.

If you do decide to remove them then i would get public liability to cover you for doing so and as the rest of the members say its always best and less time consuming to take sanitary ware out then tile but sometimes you can slip the tile in behind if you loosen screws and bring forward slightly.

In practice, you would almost always remove and re-fit, but on the courses, they'll have them fixed to give you the cutting practice. Good luck.

As tungsten tip and kilty 55, best to have blank canvas. But not always poss. in the old days it was the norm to cut around basins etc. Thank God for progress

Well im in to my 2nd week of my course.So when iv finished my friend has given me my first job and abit of practice as he called it.He wants me to do his down stairs Toilet.Then my sisters bathroom floor as she had the floor tiled and the person who did it didnt ply it and its all cracked and coming up.So some bits to keep me busy.

Hi Hemmingway, too much for you to get involved with for now in my honest opinion, become a master at tiling first. Put your money into good tiling tools and a reliable ansd clean van. Befriend a plumber and work in tandem with them, really the plumbing side can get real big real quick and the extra cost of insurence and the vast array of extra tools and skills you will need will be a big undertaking straight away.

It's always good to learn the art of cutting around them too. I get a buzz out of customer not being able to tell it's been cut around - in the instances where the fixtures couldn't come out.
I did 2 toilets week before last in a caravan park, 3 toilets in ladies, and one in the gents.
