walls or floor?
o.k lads, when doing floor to ceiling walls and also the floor, would you do the floor or the walls first, and why?
I generally do the walls first , mainly so i dont have the need to trample over a new floor to get to the walls. just wondered if others do it differently

Re: walls or floor?
if the grout lines are to marry up,I normally do the floor first so that I have a grid plan for my wall tiles to follow, this also lets you hide the perimeter expansion joint with the wall tiles

Re: walls or floor?
I am normally a walls first man too, though as Doug says, if you need to carry through the grout joints, then floor first!

Re: walls or floor?
Same as merlecollins. Walls first, leaving out bottom cut, then floor, then fill in bottom cut of wall.

Re: walls or floor?
Depends on the job to be honest, tile size / grout joint continuation between wall and floor, continuation of work, i.e: if all you have is the wall and floors there's no point doing the floor to watch the addy drying before you can do the walls, rather do the walls first and then jump 'straight' onto the floor, this again is only a rough idea, sometimes the job can't be done this way, example... Barratts homes site, we have to do the floors first so that the plumbers can get in to fit the bath, and the joiner can fit the vanity etc then we can do the walls, so it really is down to the job in hand and what suits best.

If you set the walls out OK then just put them up and leave the bottom cut off - this way you can drop the floor in with a decent perimeter movement joint, silicone seal this movement joint and cover it neatly with your bottom course of wall tiling. This method particularly lends itself to wetrooms, although they would already be tanked so no need for the silicone movement joint.

That is the way. Walls without bottom cut, then floor and floor tile cut you hide by wall bottom piece

Yip that's generally the way I work, with a couple of exceptions, its the easiest and most efficient way in my opinion

Walls first then the floor.

Re: walls or floor?
Depends on the job and the type of tile. If it's a bathroom I usually do the floor first, but sometimes it's easier to do the walls first.

Re: walls or floor?
walls first for me but leave the bottom cut out, once floor is done cut bottom row in
happy days!

Re: walls or floor?
hi
walls first and then floor, unless as said above continuous grout lines where the floor tile size/pattern matches..
there will be the odd time when the floor has to go in first but as long as the floor is well covered and clean then there shouldnt be too much too worry about..

Re: walls or floor?
In a bathroom would normally do floor first so the plumber can check if pipes need to be moved as floor height has been raised, then walls.

Then protect with cordex.
acciddents can happen but i`d say that most tilers here would be skilled & competent enough not to damage the floor.
but we are human.
(I havent done many residentials so i suppose i cant really comment.)

I'm with Doug on this, if floor and wall joints pick up. I will lay floor first, easier than squaring everything up,and risk being a couple of mill out

Same here and what does it matter if you get a bit of mess on the new floor. It will clean easily and i usually give the floor a final wipe over as i leave the job anyway.

I agree with merle on this one
dont suffer problems find solutions

Re: walls or floor?
For those who need to match wall to floor lines but don't want to stick the floor first, with a bit of careful dry laying you can find your lines. Done this in a job recently where I couldn't lay the floor first, makes you feel like a legend when all 4 walls line up to the floor perfectly.

Re: walls or floor?
I think it is personal preference.. either isn't wrong.... Once a silicone joint is in place you can't tell anyway.
So you do what works for you or what is the easiest way according to the job in hand..
Oh!! i do both ways.... just depends on the job and how quick i have to be..

Re: walls or floor?
when tiling a swimming pool i always tile walls first then the floor, if it is a hopper floor then you have no choice

Re: walls or floor?
I do the walls first and then the floor.
But sometimes I do the floor first then the walls.
Then on ocassions I do 1 wall, then the floor, then the other walls to bond in.
I often leave the bottom cut out and put it in after the floor is done.
But sometimes I put a full tile to the floor first.
Variety - that's what makes this job so interesting.
