    Default 3 sized tiles!

    i'm starting a job in a few weeks. Its 26sq mtres and the customer has seen these tiles that are 60+60, 30+30 and 60+30. Because its a large area he wants a mix of sizes arranged so there is no long grout lines. He would also like as many of the 60+60s as possible and so many of the smaller tiles!

    is there a pattern to go off for this of do i just randomly put them down as i go!

    also should i draw his room scaled down on some graph paper and plan it all out so i know how many of each size to order?

    or is there an easier solution to all of this?

    I have found that they come in a box as one pattern, the trouble with buying seperates is make sure the joints are all going to be the same, usualy 3mm

    Cheers! i'm still not convinced there is a pattern for the 3 sized tiles i have for the broken groutline look! i think its gonna have to be random.

    it says to order 60% of the larger tiles and 40% of the other 2 sizes!!!
    i'm not sure how that works out, but i'll check i can get a refund on any unused tiles!

    Hi Tactile

    I had the same prob a while ago the tile shop gave me some patterns but thought they all looked wrong. So I had a little play and this was the pattern I came up with. I know the tiles are smaller but the principle is the same. Hope this helps

    when you've decided on your pattern, dry lay a few first to get the best joint spacing, I've done odular patterns, esp with natural stone, where I've had to have as thin a joint as possible to ake sure that the joints don't creep

    Sometimes, even tiles that are sold as modular dont go together very well without having to fix by eye (without equal spacing) for example if the tile are spot on 60x60 then the 30x60 and 30x30 will be wider than the 60x60 tiles by the time you fix them with grout gaps.

    Have a good look at them before purchase and fitting, it would be ideal if the 60x60 tiles were spot on and the 30x60 and 30x30 where 29.7x59.7 and 29.7 x29.7 this would leave you with a few mm to play with for spacing.

    As someone mentioned dry lay a few on the shop floor to see how they look.

    That is usually the pattern for 3 tiles..that interlock size wise.. but you can do random but watch for using to much of one size incase you run out.

    when it comes to ordering I use the following formula

    e.g. based 3 size design as shown in the above pic

    add up you area for the chosen design you have made

    300x300 = A (.09 sqm)
    300x600 = B (.18SQM)
    600X600 = C (.36sqm)

    total area for that = A+B+C = .63SQM

    DIVIDE YOU SQ METERAGE BY .63

    E.G. 10sqm floor = 10 / .63 = 15.873 (16)

    so you will need around 16 of each piece

    Add on 10 to 15 % as a contingency

    with random patern you would use the formula the guy at the shop gave you e.g.
    based on 10sqm

    60 x60 = 12 tiles (40%ish)
    30 x 60 = 17 tiles (20%ish)
    30 x 30 = 34 tiles (20%ish)
