i am in the process of doing my first kitchen ( my own ) , the setting out has been a nightmare to figure out , i finally made myself a gauging stick out of a length of straight timber marked with the size of tile i am going to use , moving it along the wall i can 'see' what is going to look right or wrong , dont forget you will most likely have to compromise somewhere , it is getting the best compromise that is tricky

Remember with a brickbond you only have a half tile to play around with rather than your full tile.

It will be just to balance out the tiles in setting out

You need to consider your key focal points first, i.e. cooker / cooker hood. Make sure that your tiles sit even in the cooker hood recess and then check where your cuts will fall around sockets, into corners etc, trying to avoid "slithers" (you may have to make some minor adjustments to gain an aesthetically pleasing look). Remember that there will usually be a microwave / toaster / bread maker or something else placed in the corners so don't stress too much at keeping the look of a full tile flowing around the corners like you would in a bathroom.

As for the vertical setting out, try to avoid small cuts, a full tile off of the worktop usually looks best but if you end up with rubbish cuts at a window cill or plug socket etc, then try a half tile off the worktop. Remember to find the lowest part of the worktop before you get carried away with your measurements, too.

Try to leave a 2mm gap between worktop and bottom of tile and fill it with silicone, not grout.

Good luck and take your time. Remember quality comes first, then the photos on here, then your speed .

In 99% of kitchens, if you centre to the cooker hood, then that will dictate the rest of your wall. If it's broken bond, and you end up with a small cut, the next row will have a big cut so it'll not look like an eyesore. Window wall requires a bit of playing about.

i know that this may sound stupid!!!! but when i first started i used to stick the tiles to the wall using blue tack to set them out this will allow you to position them correctly and to see the effect.

Sorry cj, never tried the blue tack method. I stick with a staff/ pinch rod/ gauging stick. Depending were you live.
