Travertine mosaic sealing
I have to fit some travertine mosaic soon, but was wondering what is the best order to seal and grout etc.
It is small mosaic (48mm sq) that is unfilled. I will be using Mapei grout (jasmine)
Do I seal, fit, grout, seal (until water beads off) or another different order?

Re: Travertine mosaic sealing
It depends upon how you work...1 coat of sealer will make it easier for clean up then seal again afterwards once dry...

Re: Travertine mosaic sealing
Personally, I would fix using white adhesive, clean, grout and allow to dry for at least 24 hours, then apply the sealer.
If you seal prior to fixing, the grout will not sit in any voids in unfilled trav.

You using a heat gun to dry the tiles before sealing?
What sealer you using? Never found one that will work as fast as that.
How's Tonto?

Re: Travertine mosaic sealing
i would put up the mosaics using white adhesive, washin excess adhesive as i went!
allow adhesive to dry out so as there is no moisture in the tiles, approx 24 -48 hrs depending how quickly it dries out! then i go over them with a scotch pad/brush/cloth to remove any dust etc then i give them a mist coat of sealer allow to dry a couple of hours then i grout! then when the grout is dry 24-48 hrs its gotta be dry and the tiles have gotta be dry(no moisture in them) or else the sealer wont penetrate into the tiles!! i give them another buff up to remove any grout dust etc and then seal them again giving it a good coat this time after 15mins of applying i give them a wipe over with a soft cloth so as to remove any excess before it dries on the surface! after 2-3 hrs i then give it another coat, now it shouldnt absorb it like it did last time so wipe away excess/runs after about 5 mins this time!
if you find that it is still soaking up like a sponge then you may need to give it a further coat!!!

Hi Blocko
Somestimes we use grout release on travertine instead of sealer, then grout, then 2-3 days later we use a sealer. Grout release washes out well and doesn't mess with the adhesion of grout the way a sealer can.
Aqua Mix allows for application of sealer with only 48 hours time after grouting.
Here we substitute the cup of tea for coffee
while we are waiting.
