Have started to take payment up front for all materials
Just keep in mind that if the customer went into a distributor themselves for their own gear they would have to pay up front, so why should you be stretched until you're finished the job??

FOR FIRST TIME CUSTOMERS I TAKE A DEPOSIT FOR ALL MATERIALS; IF ITS A LONG STANDING CUSTOMER I TRUST THEN IT DEPENDS ON THE AMMOUNT. GOT CAUGHT OUT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO ON SOME NON REFUNDABLE TILES. TOOK AGES TO SELL THEM ON, AND AT A LOSS.

Always state on my quotes that a deposit for materials is required but don't bother asking for it if its only a couple of bags of addy and grout!
