| Customers getting there own tiles. | | I did a job on Friday, two showers, two splash backs and a row of tiles with a boarder around the bath, i gave the guy a price, got too 4pm only had bath to do everything else done and grouted, only to find out he didn't have enough tiles to finish the bath, so i have to go back Monday to finish. What would you do in this situation? I would like answers from new tilers to see how there people skills are on this one. | | |

I know you should really go softly softly with customers, but it's causing you to go out another day, bank holiday n all.
I would say day rate to come on tuesday "if I didn't have another job on or max out the rate for it being a bank holiday.
Not many tilers or any other trademen would go out for a standard days rate on a bank holiday.
Just read the post again.
If it was just say 2hr to get there unload and to lay one row and border around the bath then full days rate for monday, anymore than 2 hrs work then I'd hike it up more.
If you got a burst water pipe in your home and needed it fixing on a bank holiday, you'd pay through the nose for it doing.

If I was making a bloody good whack out of it then I might charge for the hours I was there.
Do you really think many people would realistically even expect someone to come out and work on a bank holiday for nothing ?
I know they would like it, but expect it... nah I can't see it, when it isn't the tilers fault there isn't enough tile to finish on the saturday.

| Re: Customers getting there own tiles. | | This has happened, not just the once niether. I used to and still do suck it up. I tell the client how many tiles I want, I am expected to check they have the right amount when I start and if not they have to get back and get the extra before I need them, or if I need to I'll pop along at an hourly rate (obviously depending where they got them). I treat every client as not knowing a thing and therfor need to guide them entirely. | | |

| Re: Customers getting there own tiles. | | OK, i will tell you what i did, i said to the guy i would come out on Monday to finish, he is a really nice guy plenty of tea etc, he said how much extra on my price i said, its nothing, he said it was his mistake and said he would give me an extra £50. everybody's happy. I got extra £50 customer recommends me to his friends. People skills is a most important thing dealing with customers in this job. If i had said to him i want a days money i probably wouldn't of got payed for it, so this way i got £50 and a happy customer. | | |
