    baton stands,glue gun.

draw a line around the room above the first row and cut the first row in then tile up

just like a datum line but above first row.

Mapei claim that there UltramasticIII tubbed adhesive has no vertical slip so in theory this could be used with battons or nails but, you would need to work from a datum of some sort e.g. laser or draw your datum line round the room.

I have never used this so cant vouch for it. Its the most expensive of the tubbed gear also so not the ideal option for larger areas.

Keraflex powder adhesive from Mapei is also supposed to have no vertical slip.

I use Ardex d2 so no need for battens. Holds up to a 600x 300 mm no probs.
Its expensive but with the time saved it more than makes up for it .Can also be used in wet area's over waterproofing.

If im using normal mix up addy and the tiles are huge (600x600) i will do my setout and cut my first row and work my way up from there. too easy .

a wee typo on my last post, I meant to write that this product would allow you to fix tile WITHOUT (not with) batons or nails etc.
